GWBL - 2025 - WEEK 5
WEEK 5 – 2025 SEASON – GWBL
Welcome back for another week of GWBL entertainment. As always, we’ll start with a quick note on the SURGING Patriots. What a game. An incredible effort by the Patriots defense to hold Josh Allen to 20 points. An eye opening performance from Stefon Diggs, who had me saying “wow” about 8 times during the course of the game. And of course, Drake. Whooooo doggy. He definitely had me worried at points earlier this season. Some bad interceptions, missed throws, etc. But that all changed in Week 4. Then again in Week 5. Holy moly. Throwing dimes, shrugging off sacks, keeping plays alive, willing the Patriots to the win. DRAKE MAYE IS A SUPERSTAR!!!
If you rewind to the Week 2 recap, the Patriots had just beaten the Miami Dolphins in a thrilling game. A 33 to 27 win IN Miami. I said something along the lines of “this was the most exciting Patriots game I’ve seen since 2021”. Well that’s changed. THIS was the most exciting Patriots game I’ve seen since 2021. I stayed up for the entire Sunday Night game, something I also haven’t done since 2021. And I feel like I’m still tired, somehow. OLD. TOO OLD.
It feels good to be a Patriots fan right now, a soft, warm, fuzzy, familiar feeling. Let’s keep it going.
While we’re talking about superstars…. This week’s entertainment will highlight the superstar of each team. In general this will be the guy scoring the most points, but not always. Sometimes it’ll be a draft steal or FA pickup whos’ filling a key role. Let’s get into it:
Chase is On the Case (Ken): 5-0
Hard to believe, but I’m going to go with Mahomes here. The QB2 in our scoring through 5 weeks. Ken picked him at 4.10 and he’s outscored every QB but Josh Allen thus far in the season. He has 3 games with 29 or more points and has found a renewed sense of purpose on the ground. We knew Mahomes could still sling it, but I thought the days where he’d be a threat on the ground were mostly over. Especially as he eclipsed the 30 year old marker. Not so fast – 190 yards and 3 TDs through 5 weeks. Pretty good for an old man.
Tom’s Retirement Tour (Commish): 4-1
Have to go with Jonathan Taylor here, my 1st pick in the draft (2.03). He’s RB2 on the season and only 2 points behind the #1 guy (no spoilers). He has 3 games with 34 or more points. His low water mark is 16.4 points, which is a good week for pretty much anyone else on my team. Two separate games with 3 rushing TDs and a workhorse role. Gotta love it.
GALSFLL LAMAR JACKSON (Lamone): 3-2
Normally I’d say Lamar but he’s on the shelf and Lamone has dropped 2 straight as a result. This is what everyone seemingly forgot about Lamar – he’s no iron man. Sure he performed at an MVP level in 2024-2025. But he was injured and may have quit on his team in 2022-2023 (contract related, could just be speculation). Now he’s hurt again and the Ravens are spiraling. That’s 3 seasons out of 5 where he’s not fully available. Sure I’m being a bit of a hater, but just had to say it.
Anyways MVP…..guess I have to say the GM - Lamone. Last week he spot-starts Gainwell and gets 37 points out of it. This week he picks up Dowdle and gets another 37 for his troubles. He didn’t get the win, but it really boosts the confidence when you seemingly can’t miss.
Deebo Baggins (Frader): 3-2
The Rookie, the 88th pick in our draft – Emeka Egbuka. Is he the best WR to come out of Ohio State in the past 5 years? Better than Garret Wilson, Chris Olave, JSN and Marvin Harrison Jr? He just might be. He’s the 3rd best WR in our scoring and is Baker Mayfield’s #1 target. Keeper for 2026 locked in.
King Henry’s Court (DMO): 2-3
Javonte Williams, somehow. This guy was injured and missed most of the season in 2022. He comes back in 2023 and clearly isn’t the same. Then last year was supposed to be the year he was “back to his old self”. Nope, he was a dud. Couldn’t do much of anything despite a great role in a good Sean Payton offense. They let him walk, he signs a 1 year contract for small dollars and no one takes him seriously. So what happens? Oh nothing, just an RB3 performance so far. Forget MVP of DMO’s team, he will be the overall fantasy MVP this year.
She Wants the Young Caff (Dyl): 2-3
I’ll go with the #1 RB in our scoring – The Young Caff. The 49ers offense has imploded, but McCaffrey has been the one constant. He’s put up 25+ fantasy points in each game despite not registering a rushing TD. It’s the receiving that’s been the cheat code: 52 targets (WTF), 39 catches, 387 yards and 3 TDs through 5 weeks. That’d be a good statline for a WR, nevermind an RB who has also put up 282 rushing yards.
Two Joe’s One Kupp (Tone): 2-3
Puka Nacua AKA Jerry Rice. Ho hum another 20 point fantasy performance from Nacua. Remember when we were all worried about Matthew Stafford’s back injury? Yeah….. that apparently isn’t a thing. Nacua IS a thing though. The best thing since sliced bread and Jerry Rice based on the box scores. He’s gone for 23 or more in every single game and has 10+ receptions FOUR times already. That’d be good for a whole season. Ridiculous.
Brown ^ 2 (Keetz): 2-3
Keetz has some good options but I’ll go with Amonra St. Brown. Despite a lackluster Week 1 performance (8.5 fantasy points), Brown is still WR2 and the 6th highest scoring player in our league. Since Week 1 he’s gone for 39.6, 20.7, 26 and 18 fantasy points. He’s already at 6 TDs and is looking like a stud.
Oshkosh B’Gosh (Kev): 2-3
Brock Bowers…..not. I guess Kev was so depressed by his Week 4 loss that he forgot to set his lineup in Week 5. Or he’s so exhausted from the newborn he can’t see straight. The crazy thing is Kev started Darren Waller in his flex (18 points), but had Dalton Kincaid on his bench (17 points). Wake up Kev!!!
I LOVE LAMB (Tieg): 1-4
I guess I’ll Deebo here. He was a 9th round pick and is WR7 on the season. I’m not sure if Tieg has started him every week, but he’s definitely a must start right now. He’s fit really nicely into that offense and the McLaurin injury certainly helps. With Jayden Daniels back Deebo should go on a run these next few weeks. (The late TD they had in Week 5 was so unnecessary but it got me the win so I’ll take it, sorry tone.)
